Hydras:
Mage Hunting Guide
Introduction: Hydras, if hunted properly, can be safe, great loot, and excellent experience. Alternately, if hunted inproperly, they can be both a terrible waste of resources, and very dangerous.
Level 28-65: At this level you will be able to summon DS, which is most important. You will go to the big hydra spawn, near the Ank-Port mountain pass. Aside from a blocker, it will be important that there is another shooter with you. Both mages shall summon 2 DS. The following diagram shall demonstrate where the blocker, hydra, shooters, and DS will be when you attack
S=Shooter X=Open Space F=Fire Field H=Hydra B=Blocker M=Mountain
XXXSSXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXFHM
XXXXXXXBMM
XXXXXXXMMM
After the blocker lures the hydra into this position, both shooters should attack the hydra. If done as demonstrated, the DS will trap the Hydra from fleeing, and as long as the blocker uses the spell "challenge" your DS should not take much damage, although you may still have to occaisonally use IH's on them. Use your strongest fire wand to attack the hydra also (Druid - Volcanic Rod, Sorc - Wand of Inferno). The following diagram shall demonstrate your positions after attacking. (The DS will step upon the fire field)
S=Shooter X=Open Space D=Demon Skeleton summon H=Hydra
M=Mountain B=Blocker
XXXXXSXXXX
XXXXXXSXXX
XXXXXXXDDD
XXXXXXXDHM
XXXXXXXBMM
XXXXXXXMMM
If you hunt them in this manor, the hydra will die very quickly, and will not be able to retarget you as a shooter, or run to escape. Volcanic rod obviously has more range than the WoI, so the druid can stand 1 square farther back than a sorcerer. If you would like to get a bit more exp than the other shooter, you can additionally shoot HMMs at the hydra. Other than getting slightly more exp, HMM's will be a waste of resources.
Level 65+: At around this level you should be able to hunt hydras with just a blocker and yourself (No second shooter required). This can be accomplished by summoning 2 demon skeletons, placing a fire field, and rapidly casting the spell "exori vis" on the hydra. It would be wise for your blocker to keep the hydra's head pointed away from you while you do this.
Level 100+: At around this level, you should be able to economically solo hydras. This can be accomplished by placing a fire field (to stop the hydra from moving around), and then spamming the hydra with exori vis. At this level, combined with your magic level, your energy strikes will be strong enough to quickly kill off the hydra, providing great experience and loot for you.
Safety Rules:
*Until you are confident enough with your HP, it would be a good idea to keep mana shield on, as the hydras poison wave can hit up to 300 damage.
*Bring a few backpacks of mana fluids to keep your mana shield up, summon your DS, and continuously fire your fire wand. You won't have to worry about bringing food, because hydras drop plenty.
*Always stay diagonal of the hydra, to avoid being hit by its powerful wave attacks
*If there is no druid in your hunting party, you should have a BP of Intense Healing runes ready for healing your Demon Skeletons. If there is a druid, he can use Mass Heal to heal them.
Good Luck with hunting Hydras!
