When you post a message now, you can see at the bottom of yout message how many characters that are left to use. I have 49855 characters left now.

There is a preview of your message in the advanced reply window. It shows the smilies and images like they will apear on the screen when you submit your reply. It also shows the tables, quotes and lists you make like they will be when you submit.
